Guinness's Bicentennial 1759- 1959 Ocean Bottle Drop amber glass sealed with complete original contents
In 1959, 150,000 bottles were dropped in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in batches of 45 in packages designed to disintegrate and allow the bottles to wash up wherever the tide brought them! These lead-sealed amber bottles contained 3 scrolls including this letter from King Neptune! 🤴
Of course the vast majority were wrecked on rocks or lost to the seas, but some survived and were found from Liverpool docks to the Artic Circle, The Bahamas to South Africa.
Now, curiosity and excitement encouraged most to be opened by the lucky finders whereupon they would discover the individually numbered contents included King Neptune's letter, a booklet all about Guinness, a specimen Guinness Foreign Stout label to start your Labology collection, slightly bizarre instructions for turning your bottle into a Lamp using cement and rusty nails... and more besides!
Naturally this left very few intact unopened examples, one which we are delighted to present for sale today.
